Traversée de Groyabada et Pastougrain de Curacao à Cartagène

 du 16 au 23 décembre 2001

 Nous avions décidé de prendre la route cotière plutot que la longue route exterieure après avoir entendu les experiences d’autres navigateurs. La plupart se sont fait bien tabasser au large. Sur la cote , il y a plusieurs haltes possibles qui ont été décrites par le bateau americain Pizzaz dans les “Compass” de mai et juin 2000, et complétées dans le bulletin du SSCA de avril 2001. Attention : il ne faut pas s’arreter ailleurs!! Nous avons navigué de concert avec nos amis sur Pastougrain (Beaujolais 12m) et sommes restés  à moins d’un mille l’un de l’autre pour des raisons de sécurite.

Santa Martha-Los Monjes (12°21N, 70°54W) Distance GPS : 110M

Nous sommes partis de la baie de Santa Martha sur la cote nord ouest de Curacao dans l’aprés midi (14.00hr)  pour arriver au Monjes de jour. Mais le courant et le vent furent plus fort que prévu et nous avons du ralentir pour arriver à l’aube.Vent E de 20 a 25nd et jusqu’à 3 nd de courant favorable. Mer assez forte au sud de la cote d’Aruba.

L’accueil des militaires Venezueliens est courtois. Ces rochers sont interéssants et l’abri de la houle tres correct. Le seul inconvénient est le générateur electrique super-bruyant qui tourne 24h/24. Il parait qu’il va être remplacé bientot?

Los Monjes à Baie de Guayaraca (11°21 N, 74°07W) Distance GPS :208M

Sommes partis vers 08.30hr, avons passé une nuit en mer et sommes arrives la nuit suivante a 00.30hr avec l’aide du GPS et du radar. Vent E à NE inferieur a 10nd , puis 15 hr de moteur (un comble sur ce trajet) et 15 a 20Nd’E à l’arrivée. Nous avons mouillé au fond de la baie sans problèmes. Le seul danger étant un rocher submergé au milieu de l’entrée que nous n’avons jamais pu repérer., indiqué sur les cartes. C’est une superbe baie dominée par les 6500m de la Sierra que nous avons juste apercu. Nous aurions du y rester plus longtemps, mais sommes partis le lendemain. Avons eu des contacts sympa avec les barques locales.

Baie de Guayaraca à Santa Martha (11°15N, 74°13W) Distance GPS :  22M

 Peu de vent sur ce trajet. Sommes passés entre l’ilot Aguja et la terre.C’est au large de cette ilot que l’on peut se faire secouer très fort avec du vent  Nous avons mouillé comme recommandé devant la ville balnéaire de Santa Martha, fort animée à cette saison avant Noel. Un navigateur local nous a dit pouvoir débarquer en toute sécurité. Nous sommes restés à bord.

Sta Martha à Punta Hermosa (approx: 10°57 N ,75°02W) Distance GPS : 57M

Nous avons levé l’ancre à 03.00hr du matin, pour arriver devant l’embouchure du rio Magdalena avant que le vent ne se lève trop fort. Sommes partis sans vent au moteur. A 07.00, le vent s’est levé du NE -15nd et à 10hr , il soufflait à 25N de ENE, avec une mer forte et brune avec pas mal de débris végetaux. Apres une heure, ça s’est calmé, et nous sommes arrivés à punta Hermosa avec une mer peu agitée et vent faible.

Cette lagune  protégée par une pointe en sable jonchée de racines et de branches flottées n’est pas (ou mal) indiquée sur les cartes et sa position  varie. Il faut s’en approcher avec précaution et bien voir le bout de la pointe avant de rentrer. Il y a beaucoup de place et suffisament de fond à l’interieur.(L’année dernière un bateau americain trop confiant de ses points GPS y a fait naufrage).

C’est un lieu de rendez vous pour les planchistes. Nous avons débarque et on nous a assuré que c’etait un endroit sur. Nous avons eu une nuit tranquille.

Punta Hermosa à Cartagene(10°23.45 N ,75°34.47W) Distance GPS : 52M

Une navigation tranquille avec 10kn de vent d’E à l’arrivée. Nous sommes passés par Boca Grande (la petite passe…) qui évite le détour par Boca Chica, l’entrée principale.

La Boca Chica est bouchée par une digue submergée et l’étroite ouverture  balisee (sans feux) par une perche rouge et rouillée (souvent avec pélican perché dessus…) et un bidon vert.  De ce passage on se dirige vers le fond du port derrière la grande statue de la vierge, pour arriver aux deux ports de plaisance et à la zone de mouillage.(attention aux annexes et moteurs).

Cartagène

Nous avons décidé de prendre une place au Club Nautico pour 7$/nuit (avec eau et électricité). Les formalités se font sur place pour 50$.

Il y a un bon supermarché à 500m  et un café internet juste un peu plus loin.

La vieille ville est à 25min à pied. On peut aussi prendre un taxi pour 2000 pesos(=1$)

A midi, beaucoup de petits restaurants proposent une “comida corriente” pour 2$!!

Nous y avons passé du bon temps, mais il faisait très chaud sans possibilite de se baigner à proximité des bateaux, car la mer y est assez sale.

Pour cela, nous avons fait une pause en allant aux Iles Rosario a 20M. De jolies petites iles à l’eau claire mais entourée de récifs qui demandent une carte précise pour trouver les entrées (en vente au club). Nous sommes allés au Nord de Isla Grande et avons trouvé de bons mouillages (ventes) derrière la barrière.

Un autre endroit agreable et plus pres de la cote est le mouillage de Cholon pres de l’Isla Baru. Tres bien protégé et tranquille. Nous y avons passé plusieurs nuits (a 2 bateaux).

Quelques adresses utiles:

Pour se faire faire des habits à partir de modèles, la facon coûte de 5 à 10$. Il faut apporter son tissus:

Darlys au Centro commercial Getsemani local 1B10, calle Larga (sur le chemin du port a la ville). Elle travaille vite et bien, mais a tendance à faire plus grand que le modèle…

Pour des cousins de bateaux, biminis et pavillons: Creaciones BETMAR-calle Media Luna N09-58 tel:660 25 44. travail rapide et propre, mais il n’a pas beaucoup de choix de tissus. Nous a refait les cousins du carre très correctement.

Il y a beaucoup de restaurants, mais nous avons aprrecie particulièrement les 2 suivants:
        - El Pelicano (dans le centre)
        - Donde Olano , calle Santo Domingo no 33-08.
    Il vaut mieux réserver.

Sail of Groyabada and Pastougrain from Curacao to Cartagena

(16 to 23 december 2001)

We decided to take the onshore route as the offshore one is longer and the sea conditions are not better (experience of many boats who did it before and after). Several American boats have taken the onshore route in groups without problems (e.g.Pizzaz described in “Compass” of Mai and June 2000).The SSCA bulletin of April 2001 gives an updates description. One should not stop in any other place.  I just give a short report report on our trip.We were sailing with good friends on their, Beaujolais 12m, “Pastougrain”, and did all the trip staying within 1 mile of each other for safety reasons.

Santa Martha-Los Monjes (12°21N, 70°54 W)  - GPS Distance : 110M

 We left from the pretty bay of Santa Martha on the NW coast of Curacao in the afternoon in order to arrive in los Monjes by day light, but we went too fast with the current and a steady favourable wind...

Departure 1400. Wind E 20/25kn up to 3kn of current, sea rather strong off Aruba coast. Had to slow down to arrive at dawn (06.50hr). The place is better protected from the swell that one can think .

The Venezuelian military are ok.The main problem is a very noisy generator running day and night.They told us that it will be changed for a silent one soon

Los Monjes-Guayaraca Bay (11°21N,74°07W) GPS distance : 208M

Left at 0830, spend one night at sea an arrived the next night at 0030 with help of GPS and Radar.

E to NE wind less than 10kn, then some motoring (15hrs) and E 15/20 kn at arrival. We anchored deep in the bay. The only danger is an underwater rock in the middle of the bay indicated on the charts.

Very nice bay,with the 6500m high Sierra in sight. We did not stay long as we wanted to be for Xmas in Cartagena. We should have stayed longer and could visit some indians places with local fishermen. Friendly local people came to speak with us.

Guayaraca Bay to Sta Martha (11°15N, 74°13) distance GPS :22M

Very little wind we went through the narrow passage between the island Aguja and the coast. I understood from friends less lucky than us, that with wind, the sea can be very rough and steep out of Isla  Aguja.

We anchored as recommended in front of the city of Sta Martha. Many people on the sea promenade enjoying life. We discussed with a local sailor and he said that the city was safe. We did not go on shore.

Sta Martha to Punta Hermosa (approx 10°57N, 75°02W) GPS distance : 57M

We left  at 03am in order to arrive early in front of Rio Magdalena before the wind picks up under engine with no wind. At 07.00, we had NE 15kn, and at 10.00 ENE 25kn with a rough, brown sea and many trees debris. It was better after an hour and we arrived  behind punta Hermosa with light wind and good sea. This is a very long sand spit (covered with many dead trees and branches , brought by the current from Rio Magdalena) which seems to move a lot from one year to the other. The GPS point is only a rough indication and I would recommend to stay at safe distance until one see the end of the spit. (Last year and American boat was lost there due to confidence in his GPS waypoint).

Inside there is plenty of room and depth to anchor. There are many windsurf enthusiast. I have discussed with people there and they all told me that this was a safe place. We had a quiet night

Punta Hermosa to Cartagena (Boca Grande) (10°23.45N ,075°34.47W)GPS distance :.52M

We had a nice sailing there with about 10kn of E wind then N wind at arrival. We went through Boca Grande (much shorter than the boca chica) , and found the narrow  entrance (more than 3.5 m water) in the submerged dyke indicated by a gaz bottle painted in green and a perch supposed to be red (both unlit).

One has to cross the whole harbour , sail behind the tall statute of the the Virgin to come to the 2 yacht clubs and anchoring area. (attach  the dinghies and engines..)

Cartagena

We decided  to take a place at the Club Nautico for 0.2$/foot with electricity. The formalities can be done there. It costed 50$.

There is also a good supermarket at 500m and an internet access a bit further.

The old town is at walking distance (about 25min), one can also take a taxi for  about 2000pesos (=1$).

One can eat a “comida corriente” at noon for less than 2$ !!

We had a very good time there, but it was very hot and it was not possible to swim around the boat as the sea was rather dirty.

To enjoy clean water, one has to sail to the Rosario Islands at 20M. They are very nice  but surrounded by a coral reef. The  Club Nautico sells a detailed map . We went to the N of Isla Grande and found good anchorage behind the reef.

Another place , close to the coast (and safe) is the Cholon anchorage at Isla Baru. Very well sheltered anchorage with a lot of space.

-To make any cloth from a model for between 5 and 10$ (you need to provide fabric):

Darlys at Centro commercial Getsemani local 1B 10 ,calle Larga (on the way to town from marina).She works well and fast but tends to make the cloth 1 size up!!!

Good and fast work, but does not have a lot of good fabric.Has redone our Cushions inside the boat for a bargain price.

-There are many restaurants. We liked particularly for diner:
  -El Pelicano (in the old center )
  -Donde Olano calle Santo Domingo no33-08 (also in the center)
